چکیده

This paper studies the notions of conceptual grounding and explanation (which includes notion mathematical explanation), with an aim clarifying links between them. On one hand, it analyses complex examples these two that bring to fore features are easily overlooked otherwise. other provides a formal framework for modeling both explanation, based on concept proof. Conceptual Analysis and Reductive Explanation

We hold that the first three questions should be answered positively (with some qualifications to be outlined). Block and Stalnaker hold that the first three questions should be answered negatively. Their central strategy is to argue for a negative answer to the first question, and to use this conclusion to argue for a negative answer to the second and third questions. They argue that truths ab...

Conceptual Inversion and the Symbol Grounding Problem

The paper explores the symbol grounding problem endemic to computational theories of mind. I argue that the intransigence of the problem indicates a basic incompatibility among the set of assumptions that has engendered it. Hence dissolution is the appropriate form of solution, and this requires an inversion of the conceptual framework in which the problem arises. Under this inversion, a natura...

Conceptual Grounding in Cognitive Processes

Cognitive Scientists have long grappled with the question how concepts are grounded in experiences. Recent years have witnessed a surge of interest in the grounding of conceptual knowledge in perceptual processes and actions. Important questions that have been part of the debate range from the necessity of grounding (from a theoretical perspective) to possible mechanisms (from an empirical pers...

Grounding conceptual knowledge in modality-specific systems.

The human conceptual system contains knowledge that supports all cognitive activities, including perception, memory, language and thought. According to most current theories, states in modality-specific systems for perception, action and emotion do not represent knowledge - rather, redescriptions of these states in amodal representational languages do. Increasingly, however, researchers report ...

Towards Grounding Conceptual Spaces in Neural Representations

The highly influential framework of conceptual spaces provides a geometric way of representing knowledge. It aims at bridging the gap between symbolic and subsymbolic processing. Instances are represented by points in a high-dimensional space and concepts are represented by convex regions in this space. In this paper, we present our approach towards grounding the dimensions of a conceptual spac...
